Cost of Patrick Reynolds'
NOTE: If you're a school lacking funding, hospitals often sponsor Mr. Reynolds' talks to youth in schools; he'll speak again on their campuses. Sometimes they partner with other local hospitals and have him speak at multiple schools. Tell a hospital's Director of Marketing you have a speaker who's likely to attract local press coverage, and that it's a great outreach to the community for them. Mr. Reynolds will also speak at their hospital. Our Five Minute Plan tells you who to call and offers talking points.
The cost for Mr. Reynolds to speak is $4,000 per overnight stay plus travel. For that he will give two talks, whether to youth or adults. Additional talks are $2,000. Travel expenses from Los Angeles are usually under $1,000, if within the US.
To hold the date, a 50% deposit on the speaking fee usually follows signing of our standard agreement. You may substitute your own contract if your policy requires it.
He can come on very short notice, or book a year in advance, depending on your needs and his availability. The larger question is, how much lead time will you need to plan his talks there?
If Patrick's allotted speaking time permits, he will also hold a Q&A session. There is no charge for him to attend an informal reception, luncheon or give press interviews. Schools often offer a 50 minute school period, but he prefers to have a full hour for youth talks, if possible.
Mr. Reynolds can give up to three talks per day, and stay multiple days in your State, if you spread the word to your colleagues there. Shared travel costs will then apply.
In his adult talk, he'll discuss the specifics of how your State compares to other States in four areas: its no-smoking policy, tobacco tax, spending on tobacco cessation, and spending on teen smoking prevention.
His presentation varies from 20 to 90 minutes, as clients request. With adult groups, typically up to 40% of the time is Q&A. This is up to the client.
Some hospital clients opt for one talk at a local school and one talk for adults on their hospital campus or at a local college. Other hospitals prefer to have him speak only at local schools. In either case, they have found this program to be an effective outreach to their community and a strong draw for local media.
Fees quoted are for non-profit orgs in the 50 US States and Canada only. Overseas rates are significantly higher.
Hospitals often partner
Some hospitals have teamed up with other local hospitals to keep Mr. Reynolds speaking in their community for three to five days at schools. This has enabled thousands children in those communities to hear him speak live. He has also gone on Statewide tours, an toured nationally in other countries.
Health Department tobacco personnel
offer support to help hospitals book schools
Hospitals will likely get support in booking Mr. Reynolds into local middle and high schools from the person assigned to tobacco control in the County Health Department. They usually have a relationship with local schools.
Some funding may even be available toward his school talks from the health department, although only three or four States now have significant funding for tobacco prevention. In one case the Mayor's office had unused funding.
Venues in which Mr. Reynolds has spoken professionally have included hospitals, local colleges, civic auditoriums, charity benefits and local schools.
Some middle and high schools permit community members to be invited to their school to attend his youth talks. Mr. Reynolds will often give his free talk to adults on a hospital campus, at a luncheon, if desired.
The Student Activities Director at a local college may provide a venue on their campus, and sometimes cosponsor; colleges usually have a budget for guest speakers. Call the Student Activities Office at a local college to propose the idea.
If you desire an evening presentation, please schedule it on the same day he arrives from Los Angeles, in order to avoid two overnight stays.
Because Mr. Reynolds is traveling from California, he is accustomed to that time zone. If you are in the Midwest or East, please make best efforts to avoid scheduling his first day's talk in the early morning. An 8:00 am talk in the East, for example, equates to 5am, California time. So if he's arriving from California the night before, late morning times are best, if possible. If he is already on the road, it will not matter. On subsequent tour days, talks may be scheduled early.
On the final tour day, please make best efforts to schedule his last talk in the morning, so that he can make a flight which will land back in Los Angeles by 8:00 pm, if possible. Our office will work together with you on travel arrangements, after our standard contract has been signed.
Check airline schedules as a first step toward planning his talk times there. If there are no flights after his last talk, he may be required to stay a second night, and his normal minimum speaking fee per overnight stay is $4,000.
However, if a $2,000 talk at a local school is booked the next morning in time for a noon flight home, he will stay a second night without the $4,000 minimum.
In any case, it's a good idea to check airline schedules first. Delta is his preferred airline, as they often upgrade his ticket.
We also recommend the new educational video of his live talk for 7th to 12th grade.
Whether Mr. Reynolds speaks to large or small groups, media coverage is usually excellent in medium size cities. It's a great way to bring the smokefree message to your entire city, generate goodwill, and make a difference in the local community.
